Background and Problem Formulation

Education for human rights and democracy is considered to be the best tool to ensure that the next generation of Palestinians will have the skills, the knowledge and the motivation to create a truly peaceful and democratic country.  Now is the time to look towards the next generation and to empower them with the ability to live in peace and democracy. Until now we have taught our children and ourselves what is necessary to survive in times of conflict. Also we taught our children how to be good members of the tribe.  Our children must be provided with the skills and knowledge to live in peace and to create mutual respect and understanding that will enable them to transform their lives and this region into one of cooperation, prosperity and freedom.
Successful youth development creates a strong sense of citizenship, responsibility to both the local and global community, and an appreciation for positive social interaction.  A strong sense of citizenship aids youth in understanding the importance of individual participation in government, a basic tenet of democracy.  An appreciation for positive social interaction provides a catalyst for seeking peaceful relationships in the local and global community.  Without successful development, youth will fail to understand how peace and democracy can have a positive impact on their lives.
The workshops in (the training on ) democratic education are meant for partipants  who will use these skills for their colleagues or partners or at home  . Since the Palestinian population is mostly youngsters; we believe that when young people are nurtured by caring adults, are given opportunities to become involved in education or work that builds their skills, are supported and protected during challenging times, are actively engaged in community activities, then they become valuable contributors to the quality of community life.  When we fail to provide youth with this environment, as adults they may experience a number of negative outcomes that have a negative impact on the community at large.
By providing a sense of safety and structure, belonging and membership, self-worth and an ability to contribute, and the independence to have control over one's life, the hope organization , through its Youth Development Center, will create a forum for peace and democratic education
Most importantly, moral development is a critical task of youth development.  Youth need to develop their personal values, a sense of accountability in relation to the larger society, and apply those values and beliefs in meaningful ways.  By providing peace and democratic (human rights based) education, The Hope organization will help to shape these values and beliefs. In particular, the Hope organization philosophy promotes dialogue, tolerance, and the awareness of human rights--which are crucial elements to a peaceful and democratic society.

Such workshops will lay a firm foundation for our future to become a democratic society.
